The Valley of Dry Bones

The hand of Y'hava was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones, and caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry. And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live...

Here is a chapter from that book that I never published. I have made reference to it several times, but I never explained my thought process, so here it is.

This chapter of Ez tells us of the modern day Awakening of the Nation of Israel, which some people (some Jews included) say has nothing to do with the Will or Work of God. However, "The History of Israel" (Howard Sachar) as here spelled out fulfills precisely this prophecy of Ezekiel.

First you will notice that there are two main stages to the restoration of Israel - seen in the two movements of the Spirit of God in vs 7 and 10.

Stage 1 The First Call

The Bones: In vs seven Ezekiel is commanded to prophesy unto the bones which he did. This type was fulfilled by Theodore Herzl who "called for" the first Zionist Congress in 1897 and himself made Aliyah in the summer of 1898, and this is when the movement really took off and many Jews started moving to Israel. This is typified by the Bones Coming Together or the people returning to the land and to each other in the years from 1898 up to 1948, which was solidified by the War of Independence. As well, the impromptu government and political Skeleton that was then formed has remained basically unchanged since then.

The Muscles: After independence the Kibbutz movement took off with many mass immigration movements of Jews to the new state - The Aliyahs. This stage ended in the war of 1956 which resulted in a show of strength (i.e. "Flexing the Muscles") on Israel's part that propelled them onto the worlds stage in "the council of nations" which has ended in them being considered the fourth strongest army in the world according to some sources. It also led to the capture of Sinai and again it could be stated of them that, "Out of Egypt have I called my son."

The Organs: The internal infrastructure was increased during these years, and they also ended in a war in 1967, in which Israel regained Jerusalem and the Temple Mount - The Heart of the Nation.

The Skin: And finally, the years from 67 to 1973 ended in a final war which saw Israel capture the Golan Heights which is a strategic position militarily and is also the source of their water - the life of The Skin and has led to them actually producing enough food for their own nation and actually exporting food to others.

Note that each stage ended in a war with the Arabs (and even the first call by Herzl was 'midwifed' between WW I and II) and there have been no more and no less then typified by Ezekiel's vision. The incursion into Lebanon was really unproductive and basically just a thorn in their sides, and not really a war. As well, each war led to a further influx of Jews making Aliyah.

Now, since the last war there have been only two points of notice. One is the start of the Peace process during this "Time Out" in the Biblical description - which Peace Process has basically amounted to Spitting in the Wind. And, the second point of notice is that the Messianic Spirit has revived and, more so now then at any other time, is at a "Fever Pitch", including the desire to build the Temple as they wait for "The Light to return to Israel". This social environment is summed up by Sachar as "The Crisis of the Israeli Spirit" which is exactly what Ezekiel saw, i.e. the Body had been restored, but it was still 'dead' or lifeless. Hence our Lords question in the verse at the top of the post.

Stage 2 The Second Call

Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Come from The Four Winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live...

Again Ezekiel calls to the Wind (Or Spirit - same word) and the Spirit returns to Israel and they stand up and become an exceedingly strong army. Notice the timing elements. The call went out to "The Four Winds" (see my post by same name) and this is referring to the Four Spirits of the Heavens which ARE the Four Horsemen of Revelation. This then shows us that the Spirit returns to Israel at the Rapture of the Church and the beginning of the tribulation, when the Lord will again begin working in the world through Israel (144,000, Moses and Elijah and possibly others), as opposed to the Church (this is really what some Christians are having a problem with and struggling over and they might not even realize it - see Rom 11).

As well, since all the other stages were connected with war, one way or another, and since the results of this return of the spirit is compared to an army, it is to be expected that this will also be solidified by war. It could be referring to the end of the tribulation, but I think that it is referring to the solution to the current problems in Israel between them and the Arabs. Note that each war was concerning this relationship which is hinted at in the chapter on Mt. Seir just prior to this passage (chapter 35), which is probably the same as the first seal which is broken at the time of the Rapture (see also, Ps83, Zech 9, Num 10 and Jud 4-5 and my recent posts on Daniel and the A.C.). It is the outcome of this final conflict with Mt. Seir that results in the building of the Temple in Israel.

So, here we have a perfect blending of the History of Modern Israel with the Word of God and the exact description of where we are at in God's timetable. For those who say that this process was not God's will, I suggest you rething your theology on this or you may be found fighting against God.

We all know who would win...
