The Royal Road : The Antediluvian Masonic Origins of Tarot!

Introduction : So, in my studies into Masonry Manly Hall suggested that the Tarot had some type of connection to Masonry and now that I have finished my studies into the fraternity I thought I would check out this possible detour and, sure enough, there is no doubt that there is a definite connection between the two Symbolic Esoteric Systems so I thought I would record them here for what that may be worth.

"The key is that the Card[s] represents the Creation of the World. The Hierarchs held this secret as of transcendant importance." Aleister Crowley, Book of Thoth

What most people who study Esoterica don't realize is that all Esoteric Knowledge has its foundation in the Creation of the World in Seven Days and this theme is apparent in the Tarot when it is pointed out to the individual as I will show as we proceed but we must understand that Symbols change over time.  A symbol that is in use now may not be recognized from its originating symbol.  The Classic example of this is the Winged Hourglass.

The Archtypical Symbol of the picture is, of course, that Times Flies and one should spend their time wisely but the problem is that that Hour Glass was not invented until the 3rd Century BC approximately and, before this, they would have used a different symbol - the Sundial.

Now, I have never seen any Symbols of Wings on the Sun Dial but if you were to add them then you would have the original symbol - the Winged Sun Disk.

373Rs0ImUygTKaKJY-o0XGykeHQKLTTUjwNKCoQK5y0=w611-h174-p-no

The Archtypical Symbol remains the same - as the Sun flys across the Sky and soon sets in the west one must consider if they have spent their time wisely or if they have wasted another day - but the way the Symbol is displayed, and the modifications that it has gone through, might not be apparent unless it is pointed out and then it become obvious to the observer what was originally intended by the original symbol.  However, there is a certain amount of information lost in the translation for the Winged Disk was also synonomous with the presence of the Diety and further explains why you should spend your time wisely (i.e. judgment day) which is lost with the Sun Dial Imagery.

So, as we look into the history of the Tarot (and Masonry itself, in some cases) we must understand that Symbols are like Languages, ever changing and 'evolving' because, in a sense, they are a living thing that reflects the lives of people and society in the present.

The Royal Road : Volume I

The Egyptian Priests (Masons) recorded the Creation Process in the form of Seven Archtypical Cards that became a part of their Esoteric Library in what the Masons would call the Book of Nature (Creation) and we can look at some Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs and compare it with the modern Tarot Card to determine exactly where the Symbolism comes from.

The Creation Process began with the Artisan (the original name for this card from a variant in the French Deck) and was originally referring to the Great Artisan of the Universe (as the Masons would call it) and it originally reflected the very moment of Creation from the Void and this was recorded in the Egyptian Hieroglyphs under the Sign for Min (same as Amin).

The Four Elements are drawn from the four Arrows that are moving out of the Void at the Time of Creation and the Infinity Sign over the Head of the Artisan is drawn from the Feather which originally symbolized the Spirit of God "Brooding" over the Abysmal Waters like a Mother Hen.  The Cube Stone Table (per Manly Hall) can be seen in the Diamond in the Middle of the Glyph.  The image of the Artisan himself was added at the Time of the Modification of the Tarot by the Sumerians to record the events described in the Epic of Gilgamesh (the War of the Mesopotamian Rose and Egyptian Lilly under the Table) and is not original (in fact, it is actually drawn from the Devil Card where the two are in the exact same pose but more on that later).  The Ouroboros around the waste of the figure is also not original and I will have more on that later as well.  The Cartouche of Min's name (which I absolutely can't find anywhere on the net) actually contains a Circle of the Void contained within a 'Square' of the Foundation Stone which is the origins for the 'Coin'.

The reader may also be interested to know that if they rotated Min's Symbol 90 degrees they would be looking at the origins of the Masonic Square and Compass Symbol used in exactly the same way without them knowing it - the exact moment of Creation or, as Y'shua the Amen said of Himself : The Beginning of the Creation of God - with a Capital G.

The High Priestess shows the Sumerian modification to the Tarot because the Egyptians did not have Priestess whereas Mesopotamia did so this card should actually be called the Whore of Babylon, believe it or not, and the Pillars she sits between are actually the Gates of Babylon and certainly not Jachin and Boaz and I will add here the the corruption of the Tarot into what we have today, when one knows the origins of the symbols, actually leads itself quite well into an Apocalyptic Tarot which I may end this thread with when I get done.

Be that as it may, there are a couple of Ancient Hieroglyphs that are the foundation for both this card and the following.

Here is the God Nuu (same as Khnum) in the original act of Creation 'breathing' out two streams to two other Gods who, in turn, breath out one stream each for a total of four which are the four Creation Streams mentioned in Genesis (Nile, Gihon, Tigress and Euphrates).  This original glyph was then modified at the time of the Creation of the original Creation Mound.

pA3pDBWDDVx5LnjDulZhuisDM13Xs8uQ-aVD3uAzWsI=w267-h183-p-no

Here the two Goddess of the South (left) and North (right - so we are looking west at sunset) are pouring out their respective streams so now we can compare all these images.

U1PEKshJgEuHQB5vbYO_NwJiuWB5pAET6MTNfjmSXNo=w107-h185-p-no

These two were divided up and given their own cards each so we will deal with both cards at the same time.  Both women on the cards are connected to their respective streams.  The Robe on the Emperess who is actually the Mother of the Emperor and not his wife, making her the Mother of Harlots, displays the same pattern as the veil behind the Whore making these two the same person (as in the Gilgamesh Epic where the Prostitute is actually Gilgamesh's mother).  It was the Whore who modified the original Tarot and she is given herself the pre-eminence here and through out the deck (as we will see) and since she couldn't have the number one spot, she claimed both the second and third as her own.  The proof is that she has taken a scepter out of thin air, as far as the Hieroglyphs are concerned.

The Queen is sitting in a Garden (as in Mother Nature) which represents the Creation Mound.  The Venus Symbol is a later addition, probably from the Middle Ages when everyone was trying to force the Zodiac into a Tarot Mode (which can't be done and only muddies the water).  The Ogdoad around the inside perimeter have become the Stars in her Crown ('Gods' being symbolized by Stars) and the Setting Sun between Twin Mountain Peaks have become the Headdress of the Whore.

Some pictures show the Queen with a Bird on her finger and that comes right out of the Gilgamesh Epic (concerning the Prostitute) where she had killed all her lovers and broke the wing of one of them who cried, "Oh, my wing, my wing!" in the Epic referring to Enki Du (who is actually Able).  The Whore does not carry the Book of the Law but the Book of Dreams which is a Sumerian Production that was already in existence (at the time of the Modification of the Tarot by the Sumerians circa 3500 BC) and actually dates back to circa 4000 BC.  The Whore's original name was Sumaru and meant Dream Interpretation and gave the name to the Sumerians.

In The Devil’s Picture Book, Paul Huson mentions a 15th century manuscript with a marginal note that gives a number to each major arcana key. In this system, Strength is 9 and Justice is 20. The French Marseilles decks (1600-1700’s) were the first to use the Strength 11, Justice 8 numbering system.

http://clavielle.wordpress.com/2011/07/11/the-strength-justice-tarot-controversy/

Concerning the controversy around the order of the cards Justice and Strength - the Waite Deck followed this version but moved Justice from the 20th slot into the 11th.  This does not affect my outline at all for this would symbolize the return of Ma'at to Egypt which the Vagabond(s) saw which is what the last seven cards are ferring to.

In fact it shows that there were three original Tarot Deck.  The oldest was the Gypsies and came to us from Ham.  The Catholic Italian and French Decks come to us from Japeth and the Masonic from Shem.  Though there was some modifications between the three they are virtually identical and don't affect the overall story.

I might eventually fill in the rest of the details that I have left out above when I get the time but for now I want to add that I checked into the Minor Arcana as well and turns out it is original to the system as well.  After the Sumerians modified the story, the Masons added the last seven cards to fill in the details that the Whore left out.  They then went on to form the Minor Arcana specifically as a Deck of Playing Cards to ensure that their version of events became more popular then the corrupted version from Mesopotamia which, in fact, it did.

The Story is read starting with the Stars which tell of conditions in Egypt just before the Pole Shift occurs (all the #2 Cards record this event).  The Staffs then tell of the preparations of Sumeria for Invasion and the capture of Osiris.  The Swords then tell of the devastation of Egypt by the Sumerians and the Death of Osiris with the Steins then telling of the outcome of this war with the Whore left to her little Dream World in the end and Gilgamesh left floating on the Sea which is probably what Y'shua was referring to in his statements about being cast into the Sea.

So, anyways, when someone went public with the Gypsies Deck, the other two clandestine organizations also published their decks which then was made into a Deck of Cards with, as Manly Hall points out, Black and Red the Primary Colors thereof.

These are the Colors of the Select Masters of Masonry...
